Q: How do I tell which BIOS version I have?

BIOS

A: When you first turn the computer and the screen displays the Energy Star Logo. On third line down from the top, towards the end of the line it will say either Ver: or Version: and then have BIOS version number.


Q: How do I uninstall the VIA Busmaster driver and reinstall my Windows default drivers?

Driver

A: To uninstall our drivers you must run the .exe file. You will be given 2 options: Install or Uninstall. Upon choosing Uninstall, the driver will be removed and Windows will automatically restore the default drivers. After uninstalling, the Windows 98 Device Manager may say that the VIA driver is still installed. Although the device manager shows the VIA driver to be there, it could have been removed. This is how to check to see if your default Windows driver has been reinstalled:

1. Go into "Run" on the Windows startup menu and type in "regedit"
2. Go into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/system/CurrentControlSet/services/class/hdc
3. Then look inside one of the subfolders for the "port driver"

Shown next to the "port driver" it will show "EDSI_506.pdr". If it shows VIA instead, then the VIA driver has not been removed . Even if the Windows default driver has been restored, it still may show the VIA driver in the Device manager. This means that you are using the default MS drivers but Windows fails to recognize it. This is a minor issue with Windows 98.


Q: My system uses Windows 98, should I install the VIA busmaster & AGP drivers?

A: Microsoft has bundled full support for VIA chipsets into Windows 98 therefore it isn't necessary to install the VIA busmaster driver but VIA suggests installing the VIA AGP driver and IRQ routing miniport driver. Check out the Windows 98 FAQ in VIA website www.via.com.tw for Windows 98 installation procedures with VIA chipsets.


Q: Does VIA have an AGP driver that supports Windows NT 4.0?

Driver

A: No, because Windows NT 4.0 does not support AGP. AGP requires support for Direct X instructions and Microsoft will only add this support into Windows NT 5.0. An AGP card is functional on Windows NT 4.0 but only limited to 2D mode.


Q: My system uses Windows 95/NT 4.0, should I install the VIA busmaster driver?

Driver

A: The main function of an IDE busmaster driver is to allow your system to take advantage of the IDE and Ultra DMA capabilities of your Hard-drive, of course you have to have an Ultra DMA-capable hard drive. If your system is running Windows 95 OSR2, there is no reason to install the VIA driver because OSR2 supports both IDE and Ultra DMA capabilities. If your system isn't running an OSR2 version of Windows 95 then you may want to install the VIA driver to take advantage of the IDE and Ultra DMA features of your hard drive.


Q: My system clock seems to be slow or stopped working. Is it a problem with my motherboard?

General

A: Yes. But the fix is very easy. Go to any electronic store like Radio Shack and find CR2032 battery. Please follow the instructions carefully:

1) Power down the system if it is not already off.
2) Unplug the system from wall outlet.
3) Remove the system cover.
4) Disconnect the power connector from the motherboard.
5) Carefully remove the CMOS battery (CR2032) from the motherboard and discard it.
6) Install new CR2032 that you bought into the battery holder.
7) Reconnect the power connector.
8) Close the cover, and plug the system.
9) Power up and enter the BIOS settings as you need to re-set the time and date as well as any other configurations there may be lost during the process.


Q: Where is the Serial Number and PWA Number on my motherboard?

General

A: The Serial Number is the long bar code sticker and the PWA Number is the short bar code sticker. They are located on the front edge of the board by the IDE conectors.


Q: When I first installed the motherboard I was getting the cpu-rpm reading from cmos. Then when I installed a case fan the cpu-rpm reading dropped to zero and I did not get any case fan speed either. Even when I removed the case fan connection I still no longer get a fan speed reading on any of the connectors. The fans are still working well with no visible reduction in speed. It there a fix for the fact that the motherboard no longer displays this informataion or did something go bad on the motherboard.

A: The System Hardware Monitor is the component that is responsible to report FAN tach to the BIOS. In your case, it may have gone bad, and need to have the motherboard serviced.


Q: How do I identify what model motherboard I have?

General

A: The model number is printed on the cover of the manual. If you lost the manual you can compare your board to the pictures of the motherboards on our website to try and identify your board.


Q: I need an IR port for this board. Is this available directly through BCM?

I/O Port

A: No. We are a board manufacturer, not a distributor. We do not manufacture or recommend any IR ports, but we provide the IR pin out information in this FAQ.


Q: I am trying to add an IrDA. What is the pin out for the IrDA connector?

I/O Port

A: IrDA Connector pin out is as follows:

1) VCC
2) FIRRX (mode select or fast IR receive)
3) IRIA (IR receive)
4) GND
5) IROA (IR transmit)


Q: Are there any USB drivers for Windows 95?

I/O Port

A: We do not have any drivers for Windows 95 because of it's limited USB support. For the best USB performance, we suggest upgrading to Windows 98 or later. If you want to continue using Windows 95, we suggest using the default drivers. You must have Windows 95 OSR2 version or later.


Q: I am wondering if you could help me how to overclock my GT694VA?

A: For warranty reasons, we can not supply information on how to overclock the motherboard/CPU. You can find this information elsewhere in the web, keep looking.


Q: I use a VIA based motherboard with Windows 98 and it is unstable or IRQ assignments are incorrect. How can I fix it?

A: Download and install the VIA IRQ routing miniport driver from our drivers page. This update corrects some issues dealing with the assignment of resources using Windows 98 and VIA chipsets.


Q: How do I delete the Yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Q: Why is my UDMA 66 performance is very poor?

A: For UDMA 66 you must first make sure that your southbridge is a VT82C686A. You must also have a UDMA 66 capable hard drive and be using an 80 pin cable which enables faster transmission of data. Windows 98 is UDMA 66 enabled, but if you have Windows 95 you should install our busmaster drivers and make sure that you have latest BIOS revision installed.


Q: Why am I unable to use my CD Writer or Tape Drive when I install the VIA busmaster driver?

A: VIA is presently working very closely with manufacturers of CD Writers and Tape Drives to add support into our upcoming drivers. VIA suggests uninstalling the VIA IDE busmaster driver and using the Windows standard default driver. An upgrade to Windows 95 OSR2 or Windows 98 is advised to take advantage of IDE and UDMA transfers.


Q: How do I optimize the compatibility and performance of my nVidia TNT2 based graphics card with my VIA chipset?

Q: I installed a Diamond Stealth III S540 in this system, and enabled 4x AGP. It locks up or crashes, how do I fix that?

A: No. The Diamond Stealth III S540 video card is equipped with a VGA BIOS that is not compatible with this board. The working equivalent is a Creative Savage which you can substitute Diamond with and run just the same with no problem.


Q: I tried to get on-board video to work. I am able to boot the system with a PCI video card. Is my on-board video defective?

A: If your BIOS has On-Board AGP video enabled, then you may have a defective motherboard.


Q: When installing the AGP driver, what is the difference between "normal" mode and "turbo" mode?

A: Installing in "turbo" mode will give your graphics card enhanced speed and performance while "normal" mode offers increased system stability.


Q: Is there anyway of overclocking the video on this motherboard?

Q: Is my MVP3 based motherboard compatible with the Intel 740 graphics chipset?

A: Yes, the MVP3 is compatible with the Intel 740 graphics chipset. You need to download the latest VIA AGP driver ver.2.6 or later. VIA also suggest using the latest Intel 740 driver ver.1.5 or later.
