BI255-1900J Intel Celeron J1900 Mini ITX Barebone Computer, Gateway Solution for IoT
BCM introduces its BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV development kit providing VARs and OEMs a proven building block foundation to an Intel® based Gateway Solution for the Internet of Things (IoT)

What is BCM’s IoT Gateway Solution Development Kit?
The BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV, an integrated intelligent system incorporating BCM’s MX1900J long-life industrial motherboard, is an Intel® Gateway Solution for IoT. The solution includes a software stack comprised of a Wind River® Linux operating system along with Wind River cloud connectivity and manageability software capable of interfacing I/O, cellular, and Wi-Fi communications down to sensors and controllers and up to data centers and the cloud. The software stack also includes enterprise-grade security solutions from McAfee®. The BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV IoT Gateway development kit provides VARs, system integrators, and software application providers the ideal embedded building block solution to serve as a stable and validated platform to build upon and speeding time to market and greatly reducing development costs.

The trend of Cloud Technology and the Internet of Things (IoT)
Cloud technology is changing the way we live, work, communicate, and entertain ourselves. So many objects and activities within our daily lives are fast becoming connected to the internet of things generating enormous amounts of data from billions of connected endpoint devices. As more and more devices connect, generating more and more data to process, store, and access from the cloud, how to aggregate, prioritize, and process that data in an intelligent and secure manner has become a necessity to prevent data overload. The more we rely on those connected devices and the real-time data they provide, the more important it is to address the reliability and security of the gateways. The Intel® based BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV development kit is a major head start in addressing these issues as part of the IoT evolution.

The “Things”
The Internet of Things is a broadness of infrastructure comprised unlimited devices across many different industries connected to the cloud via intelligent and secure gateway systems. These industries include retail, energy and building management, medical, gaming, transportation, communication, security surveillance, and industrial automation to name a few. Examples of applications within these IoT networks could include retail transactions, banking, self-serve Kiosk, digital signage, vending machines, eHome appliances, healthcare, theme park management, security surveillance, factory automation, building energy management systems, and hospitality meeting and convention centers event venue systems.

Internet of Things (IoT)

What is Intel® Gateway Solutions of the Internet of Things (IoT)?

While new intelligent computing systems are more easily adapted to efficiently operate within the IoT, there are still billions of connected legacy devices, sensors, and systems operating unmanaged and often with insufficient security. These devices often send non-essential or redundant data over the network or to the cloud clogging traffic and occupying limited resources and bandwidth. Replacing all existing infrastructure with next generation equipment could result huge investment costs to the end user and excessive development costs and significant time to market for potential solution providers. To help solve this problem the BCM BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV with the Intel® Gateway Solution for IoT SDK is a purpose built system, with pre-validated hardware and software, designed to connect legacy and new emerging systems to the cloud, unblocking valuable industrial data, and seamlessly and securely transferring, analyzed, shared, and filtered data aggregated between edge devices and the cloud.

The BCM BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV IoT Gateway Development Kit meets the requirements of an Intel® Gateway Solution for the IoT
BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV Intel Celeron J1900 Mini ITX Barebone Computer, Gateway Solution for IoT
The BCM BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV IoT Gateway development kit is BCM’s first Intel® Gateway Solution for the IoT. The BI255-1900J-IoT system has been pre-validated by Intel® to be compatible with its IoT Gateway software solution comprised of a security element through Intel’s McAfee Security Embedded Control software and a Wind River based Linux operating system plus cloud connectivity and manageability element through its Wind River Linux (Host), Wind River Intelligent Device Platform XT, and Wind River Workbench. This development kit offers customers a launch pad to speed time to market, reduce engineering costs, and leverage a proven platform qualified by Intel® as a gateway solution for IoT.

Measuring 8 x 7.1 x 2.5 inches and operated by 12V DC power, the BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV delivers high performance and low power through Intel® Celeron® J1900 quad core processor, codenamed Intel® BayTrail-D and uses the same architecture as the 4th generation Intel® Atom™ E3800 platform which is three times faster than its predecessors and offers enhanced power efficiency.

For connectivity, the BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV provides rich I/O interfaces for accessing sensor streams of the IoT applications such as online status, temperature, location, speed, humidity, and service sensors. The I/O includes four USB 3.0 ports, dual gigabit LAN ports, one COM port, Line-out, Mic-in, one DisplayPort and one DB-15 VGA. In addition, this IoT development kit provides one full size mini-PCIe socket with mSATA support and one half size mini-PCIe socket for supporting WiFi and 2G/3G/4G networks with Wind River BSP support for pre-validated modules.

The system provides two 204-pin SODIMM sockets support up to 8 GB DDR3L 1333 MHz system memory. It also provides one 2.5” HDD drive bay for storage.

What’s Included in the BCM BI255-1900J-IoT-DEV IoT Gateway Development Kit
The development kit includes one 32 GB mSATA SSD, 4 GB DDR3L memory module, an Intel® WiFi Module and antenna, a power supply, and of course a download authorization key and instructions on how to download and register the Intel® Gateway Solutions for the Internet of Things software stack (SDK) and documentation from the Intel® website. This system provides everything you need to the test drive the gateway solution for the IoT and provides an excellent building block platform to launch your own intelligent IoT device.
